Now I would like to hear from other users of this card which drivers you use for this card? I am not able to install the drivers from Dells home page because I always get the message ' Setup could not detect any Sound blaster audio hardware on your computer'. I have reformatted the hard drive with no difference.
2 product ratings - Creative Labs / Dell Sound Blaster Live! PCI sound card CT4780 / 9455U from 1999. Time left 8h 11m left. 8 product ratings - Creative Sound Blaster Live! Value CT4830 PCI Audio Sound Card. 1 product rating - New Creative Labs CT4780 Sound Blaster Live 5.1Ch PCI Audio Card Dell 181UR w/CD. That card is identified as 'Sound Blaster Live! Value Dell OEM' as a last resort you might try this package. SB P17X Series Support Pack 2.0.
The only driver I am able to run is the XP native driver. Is this really a good driver to use for this card?
I have noticed some sound problems when I e.g. Play HL2 but I don't know if the sound drivers are the cause. Btw, my computer is upgraded with a 2.8GHz CPU, 768 MB RAM and a GeForce 6600 GT video card. Since you reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled, you must install the Dell device drivers, then install the drivers for the sound card, etc. Without the device drivers a lot of the hardware will not work.
You should use the Dell provided drivers for that card as it is a custom OEM card made to Dell specs and is slightly different than the retail cards. The generic Windows drivers will also present problems and according to Dell should not be used.
There is a Dell model driver on the SoundBlaster site but I'm not sure which model Dell OEM card that is for (probably the currently supplied models). Thanks fireberd!

I don't know which device drivers you mean? I have installed the chipset drivers. From what I can see there is a separate CD for the sound card. It has the text Sound Blaster Live! Value Digital 1024 printed on it. But this CD does not work (when I put in the CD a picture shows up but disappears in a few seconds and then nothing happens).
But even if it should work I think it is not a good idea using drivers from that old CD. So there are absolutely no way for me to install any other drivers than the Windows generic. I have tried both Dell OEM which gave the error message I reported in the first message and I have also tried to run Creatives autoupdate. The autoupdate however told me that I already have drivers that are up to date. Where have you found the information that the Windows generic drivers present problems? There was a posting, about a year ago by someone with sound problems, such as skipping, choppy sound, etc.

A Dell moderator posted that that could occur if the generic Windows drivers were installed and to correct the problem install the Dell drivers. Since then, I have responded to several posts with similar problems and suggested they reinstall the Dell SB drivers and apparently that fixed their problems as there were no more posts from the originators. I suspect something did not get installed or installed correctly when you did the reinstall. The chipset drivers was what I meant to say when I referenced the drivers.
The standard procedure for a 'clean' install is to start the Windows XP install, let Windows reformat the hard drive (erases everything) then install XP, install the Dell Device Drivers then the applications programs.
